DC MINYAN COMPLETES FOOD DRIVE FOR STRIKING LAUNDRY WORKERS:
The Social Action Committee of
DC Minyan, a traditional egalitarian
Jewish community, collected non-perishable food items
throughout
the month of January to benefit workers at Sterling
Laundry who
have been on strike since September. The 110 workers,
mostly
African-American and Latina women, have been trying to
form a
union with UNITE and went on strike in protest of
sweatshop
conditions and multiple violations of their rights. The
DC
Minyan SAC collected food every Monday evening during
the weekly
Beit Midrash study group held at the DC Jewish Community
Center.
