Lunch and Learn 3/5/16

Saturday, March 5, 2016 25 Adar I 5776

12:15 PM - 2:45 PMDCJCC, 1529 16th Street, NW

Demons in the Talmud

Demons were a central part of Late Antique rabbinic law and theology. Together we'll examine how demons are constructed in the Talmud, and explore medieval and modern resistances to the presence of demons in Judaism. Using demons as our lens, we'll think through what Judaism looks like when elements that have been dismissed as non-normative are re-inscribed within its normative religious sphere.

Sara Ronis has a PhD in Ancient Judaism from Yale, and is currently a Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University. She spends a lot of time thinking about the Talmud, demons, magic, and gender.
