All Day

DC Minyan is heading to camp! We invite you to share the Shavuot holiday weekend with friends, family, and the DC Minyan community. The 2016 Shavuot Retreat will take place from Friday afternoon, June 10th through Monday night, June 13th at Capital Camps in beautiful Waynesboro, PA.

This year, we are honored to host two Scholars-in-Residence for the retreat:  Rabbi Charlie Buckholtz and Rabbi Aaron Potek.

Rabbi Charlie Buckholtz attended Williams College and Yeshivat Hamivtar, received a MFA in fiction writing from Syracuse University and ordination from Bat Ayin Yeshiva.  Charlie spend a year as rabbinical apprentice to Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, served three years as the Rabbi of the Sixth Street Community Synagogue in the East Village and is the senior editor at the Shalom Hartman Institute.  His writing has been featured in The Washington Post, The Daily Beast and, Tablet Magazine.

Rabbi Aaron Potek is the Community Rabbi at Gather the Jews in Washington, DC.  Aaron is from St. Louis Park, MN and graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering.  After graduation, he spent two years living in Israel, where he studied Jewish texts, volunteered with the Israeli Red Cross, and worked with various peace-building groups dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  He received ordination from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, an Orthodox rabbinical school in Riverdale, NY.  For the last two years, he served as the campus rabbi at Northwestern University's Hillel.  In his free time he enjoys running and doing improv.

After its successful debut in 2015, Book Club is coming back to Shavuot!  This year, we will be reading The Best Place on Earth:  Stories by Ayelet Tsabari.  To learn more about the book and get excited about the book club discussion, take a moment to read the review at the Jewish Book Council's website.

As part of our Tikkun this year, will will be hosting SinaiSlam!  It's a story slam just like The Moth where the theme of the night is "Revelation."  Community members are invited to prepare a 5-minute story that is somewhat related to that theme, and share their story as part of the Slam.  The stories can be funny, serious, emotional or repressed.  If you'd be willing to help us kick off our Tikkun with a bang, and share your story with the community, please RSVP to chinuch@dcminyan.org.
